Thanks for visiting!

Located in the scenic Loess Hills of Iowa, Wild Rose Farms is devoted to breeding & raising the finest purebred poultry and farm fresh produce & products, which we bring fresh from our farm to you.

Our chickens & turkeys are produced without medicated feeds and are raised on pasture, never in overcrowded confinement!  Because our birds are raised on pasture they are able to socialize, fly, walk, stretch, look for food and water, scratch the ground and dust bathe.  This allows our birds to perform natural and instinctive behaviors essential to their health and well being.

Once the chicks reach five weeks of age they are moved to large outside pens with access to our pastures during the day.  We maintain our own breeding flocks of purebred Cornish & Plymouth Rock for our meat birds as well as Brahma & Sumatra for our exhibition breeds.  We are members of the American Poultry Association, the oldest livestock association in America, as well as several breed clubs. We exhibit our exhibition poultry at several local APA sanctioned poultry shows each year.
Our oldest daughter, Anita Allmon, lives near Neola, Iowa  maintains our axillary herb gardens & rhubarb plants, helping to harvest and dry the herbs for our teas and supply our friends at Kings Crossing with fresh rhubarb for their wine.  During the summer months, June through September, you can find Dee & Anita at the local farmers markets, selling our fruits, vegetables, 100% pure raw honey, fresh herbs, herbal teas, seasonings & vinegars, along with our Rhubarb Fruit Spreads.  We grow our produce & herbs much the same as our pastured poultry, all natural, without the use of pesticides or herbicides. This assures quality wholesome farm fresh products that taste good and are good for you.  We take orders at the farmers markets for our meat birds which are available starting in June.  We pasture raise our Cornish Rocks & they can be pre-ordered, then we can delivered to our customers within a 25 mile radius of Glenwood, Iowa at no charge, or you can pick them up at the farmers market.  Frozen Cornish Rocks can also be purchased at the farmers market.  We are proud to now offer Heritage Chicken products from  Good Shepherd Poultry Ranch, Tampa, KS.  Good Shepherd uses only heritage breeds of poultry for all their products.  You will find excellent descriptions and photos of the heritage breeds we raise, the Barred Pymouth Rock and Dark Cornish on Good Shepherd's web site, along with recipes for preparing each of the different heritage chickens to mouth watering perfection!  You can find a wealth of information about heritage purebred poultry & the way we raise our chickens on Good Shepherd Poultry Ranch's web site at: www.reeseturkeys.net

Cornish & Plymouth Rock On Pasture

Here are some Reasons you will Enjoy serving a Pasture Raised Chicken:*

1.     It will taste like chicken.
Chickens raised on pastures where they can graze on nutritious grasses, clover and legumes, as well as do what chickens love to do, scratch and eat bugs, have flavor that only Grandma can tell you about. It won’t taste like “store bought” chicken. Instead, the white meat will have flavor lost decades ago in poultry and the dark meat will have a meaty texture and bold flavor that will beckon back to the “good old days”.

2. It will give everyone at your dinner table something to talk about and reminisce on “how things used to be.”

A generation or two before us, when folks bought fresh & local from the farmers who raised only Pastured Poultry, the poultry not only had flavor, but was a healthier food choice.  Some may remember only 30 years ago when the size of turkey breasts were one-third what they are today- before the commercial "broad breast" types - and wonder, "so how did the shape, size and taste of poultry change so much so fast"? And others will tell you where and when they had the best turkey or chicken ever, most likely a bird served on a dinner table more than a generation ago when birds were birds, chickens & turkeys could reproduce on their own, they could all fly and farm animals were actually born on the farm."

3. You will help preserve the heritage breeds for future generations.
"With the advent of industrial poultry, the genetic diversity of poultry and more specifically turkey has greatly diminished. Essentially, all commercial poultry genetics in the Eastern hemisphere is owned by one company & meat bird turkeys have been designed, through breeding, to be essentially infertile or unable to reproduce a commercially viable offspring; and these hybrid commercial turkey and chicken “breeds” do not thrive on range like the standard breeds of poultry.

4. You will help a small family farm & sustainable agriculture in your community.
"Raising poultry on pasture is hard, tedious and costly compared to commercial/industrial poultry. A pasture raised bird needs to grow some times twice as long as a commercial bird to reach harvest weights. The pasture raised bird is still a product of time and nurturing.  Farmers across America are coming back to their roots where the craft of a livestock farmer is in the art of breeding their animals, nurturing the birth of babies and enjoying the full circle of life. In poultry, that means that real farmers are breeding & raising their livestock to create the tastiest and finest looking bird for their customers. Caring for the flock, collecting fertile eggs and hatching baby chicks in the spring is an endeavor of love, much like the passion of a fine chef doting over the finest details of a dish.
